Make your guinea pigs happy and cheerful.

Guinea pigs are adorable little pets and they love to run around their hutch. Here is why you need to provide your guinea pig more space. When they have more space, they tend to be happier, healthier and will show you more of its tricks.

Exercise is generally the main idea as to why they need more space. The health benefit of exercise for guinea pigs is truly important for them. Like humans, overweight guinea pigs will have a greater tendency toward health problems. This includes heart disease, diabetes, bladder infections, respiratory problems and even humblefoot.

Adult males may develop impaction. A condition in which they loss muscle tone in the anal area and this can cause their droppings to get ‘backed up’ and this requires cleaning as often by their guardians. A large cage with enough room for exercise activity can help your guinea pig keep healthy, toned, and fit.

Moreover, adult females tend to put on weight in their belly as they get older. It would be more difficult to find and diagnose ovarian cysts and other problems related to it when females will be overweight.

Also, it is important for your guinea pigs to have their exercise on their schedule. Even if you have provided them enough floor time each day, it is still best that your little pets need to be able to exercise and explore on their own body clocks. Guinea pigs activity happens to be an hour ‘on’ and an hour ‘off’. Most guinea pigs are active in the morning and evening which may not be a convenient time for you. So offering them large enough cage, will help them exercise whenever they choose without the hassle of waking up early or watch them during the evenings.

Guinea pigs, like people, gets bored living in the same old small cage hour after hour, day after day, without so much to do. It is important that your pet needs to be hauled out and allowed to play with other species. They are sociable animals and they tend to be lonely when left alone for a long time.

In cases wherein you have two or more non-breeding or same-sex guinea pigs, it will keep them happy with each other if they have ample room for them to run and play. Also, a space when they want to get away from each other. Read the rest of this entry

Give your little pets a safe environment

Guinea pigs make lovely pets. They are loving pets and they are gentle creatures too. Also, as an owner of a guinea pig, or a person that wants to own one, it is essential that you keep your little pet safe and secure. In cases where you need to keep your pet outdoors, you have probably purchased a guinea pig hutch. Now you might be wondering about the safest place as to where to put it.

Guinea pigs love the indoors. They love to stay in a 60 to 75 degree environment like you do. Sever temperature changes can’t be good for guinea pigs either. If your pet is exposed to very hot temperatures in the day and experiences cold temperatures by night, your pet will likely be stressed by it.

If you need to keep your guinea pig outdoors, it is best that you understand that they are more sensitive to heat than to cold. Never leave your pet outdoors if the temperature inside his hutch exceeds 85 degrees. It is dangerous to your pet to be left in this type of heat for any period of time.

If need be that you have to keep your pet outside during the summer season, place the guinea pig hutch in the shade and make sure that that the window is away from direct sunlight. It is great to place them in a garden shade cloth over the hutch window so as to filter the sun. Bear in mind also that wooden hutches are cooler on the summer months rather than metal hutches.

Guinea pigs can tolerate cold temperatures but they can’t tolerate freezing temperatures. The important thing you need to do especially in colder weather is to ascertain that your pet is not exposed to dampness or drafts. This is because damp or draft places can cause respiratory problems that may lead to illness, even death. Keep the hutch off the ground so as to avoid exposing your guinea pig on water puddles and dampness. Read the rest of this entry

Give your little pets utmost comfort

Guinea pigs are adorable little pets. Guinea pigs are rodents. As a rodent, it has chisel-like incisor teeth that grows continually and kept in uniform length by lots and lots of gnawing all day. It is therefore important that your guinea pigs diet includes plenty of food to chew on. You can choose to mix a variety of textures and flavors to help you achieve with this process. This will happily give your guinea pig an interesting, appealing diet.

Also, it is best that you give your guinea pig the right guinea food. This may be an obvious thing to do but some owners give their guinea pigs rabbit foods, many of it contains an anti-coccidiostat, which is a form of medication and this is toxic to guinea pigs. More so, rabbit foods don’t contain sufficient vitamin C for cavies.

Guinea pigs needs vitamin C. like humans, they cannot make their own vitamin C, so it highly essential that they have adequate vitamin C in their diet so as to prevent illness. Look for guinea pig foods that have added vitamin C in it.

Also, guinea pigs always love treats. They will sure enjoy given a treat and luckily, pet shops and vets have a good range of stock of treats for your little one. Make sure that the treat includes vegetables, cereals or seeds. This will surely give your guinea pigs plenty to chew on and it would be so much better for your pets rather than some high sugar treats available. You can also offer small amounts of freshly washed green or root vegetables as an alternative. A handful of hay for them to chew on can be great too.

Guinea pigs need a hutch too. It is home for them and it is where they play around and sleep. It is their haven and once you decided to give them one, make sure it is the best for them. Remember that they are rodents and have long incisor teeth for gnawing and biting, so anything you place on the hutch floor can, and will be tasted.

Every hutch needs an exterior water bottle and a ceramic feed bowl. Also, your little pet will want a separate place to sleep and hide. So a cardboard box with a hole cut in it will do. You can be creative too. You can use a four inch diameter PVC piping to make a guinea pig tunnel, and the use of bricks and rocks can be great as climbing toys.

Most importantly, the hutch of your guinea pig should be placed in a warm, dry room inside your house. They are timid creatures and they need a quiet space for them to relax. The room must have good air ventilation and also, you should be wary of drafts. More so, the ideal room temperature should be kept below 80 degrees in Fahrenheit since guinea pigs have low tolerance during extreme temperatures. In addition to it, never place the hutch directly next to a radiator or heat source and avoid direct sunlight.
